"The Day Of The Locust" By Nathaniel West (Excerpt)

Well, I figured the best way to gently bring the subject up was with the words of the department itself. At this point I'm jonzin' to see a perp walk, but I also know how this town works.
I still feel bad for having a verbal tussle with a fireman on New Years morning lo, those many years ago, after The Hillview shortened itself by a story. While sweaty and smokey and wet he said something about "them" tearing down the "G.D. thing!" and I took extreme exception. I later realized that he was thinking about safety, not land developement, and I deeply regret not thanking him for saving what they DID, because that one turned out well in the end. Lets hope this little "run" of Flaming Hollywood is at end. Like Don Corleone, I am a suspicious man. So if one more nightclub should erupt into conflagration at around 6 am when it is coincidentally "empty," or a demolition crew "accidentally" demolishes a protected bungalow without a permit...I will blame some people in this town, and that I cannot forgive.
